Octavius Regional Civil Engineering (ORCE) completed drainage upgrades and improvements for National Highways on the A30 at Sourton.

Nick Brooks Contracts Manager for Regional Civil Engineering commented “This stretch of the A30 was prone to flooding and presented significant risk to road users. In phase one we focussed on the central reserve and through detailed and complex preplanning we were able to complete 1.6km of new drainage and existing system upgrades in just four weeks. We then switched the traffic management to phase 2 and completed verge works to the eastbound and westbound carriageways simultaneously. We always strive to use methods that minimise disruption for highway users, keep those road users and our workforce safe whilst delivering the most efficient and effective solutions.

As Principal Contractor we were accountable to plan and coordinate other National Highways contractor activities within the worksites and all works were completed defect free, on programme and within the project budget.”

In its totality the project included constructing new filter stone drainage, 49 new inspection chambers, upgrading the existing drainage pipework from 150mm to 300mm. The provision of a new oil interceptor and upgrading and extending the existing vehicle restraint system (VRS).
